Southern-Style Hamburger Steak
Ingredients
Hamburger Steaks

1½ lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

½ cup milk

½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed saltines

1 large egg
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
1 tsp onion powder
-
½ tsp paprika
-
Salt & black pepper, to taste

2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter
Onion Gravy

2 large onions, thinly sliced
-
3 tbsp butter
-
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt & black pepper, to taste
Instructions
-
Make the patties
In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, milk, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
Form into 4–6 oval patties. -
Brown the steaks
Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside. -
Caramelize the onions
In the same skillet, melt butter. Add onions and cook over medium-low heat 10–15 minutes until golden and soft. -
Make the gravy
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire. Simmer until thickened. -
Finish together
Return patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them.
Cover and simmer 10 minutes until cooked through and tender.
