Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

  • ½ cup milk

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed saltines

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter

Onion Gravy

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste


Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, milk, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
    Form into 4–6 oval patties.

  2. Brown the steaks
    Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
    Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.

  3. Caramelize the onions
    In the same skillet, melt butter. Add onions and cook over medium-low heat 10–15 minutes until golden and soft.

  4. Make the gravy
    Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
    Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire. Simmer until thickened.

  5. Finish together
    Return patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them.
    Cover and simmer 10 minutes until cooked through and tender.


Serve With

  • Mashed potatoes (mandatory 😌)

  • White rice or egg noodles

  • Green beans or collard greens

  • Biscuits or cornbread
