Old-Fashioned American Goulash

🍝 Old-Fashioned American Goulash

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)

  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes

  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

  • 2 cups beef broth or water

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

  • Salt & black pepper (to taste)

  • Optional: pinch of sugar (cuts acidity)

How to Make It

  1. Brown the beef in a large pot over medium heat. Drain excess fat.

  2. Add onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Cook until softened.

  3. Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, broth, paprika, seasoning, salt, and pepper.

  4. Bring to a gentle boil, then add macaroni.

  5. Reduce heat and simmer 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender and sauce thick.

  6. Taste and adjust seasoning. Add a pinch of sugar if needed.

Old-School Tips

  • The sauce should be soupy but thick, not dry

  • Even better the next day

  • Some families add corn, cheese, or Worcestershire sauce

How It Was Served

  • Straight from the pot

  • With crackers or buttered bread
