Creamy Sausage Gravy

Slow Cooker Creamy Sausage Gravy

Ingredients

  • 1½ lb breakfast sausage (pork or mild Italian)

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • 3 cups whole milk

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 cup chicken or beef broth

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 1 tsp black pepper (add more to taste)

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Salt to taste (sausage already has salt)

Optional extras:

  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper (heat)

  • ½ cup shredded cheddar (extra creamy version)

Instructions

1. Brown the sausage

  • Cook sausage in a skillet over medium heat until fully browned.

  • Break into small crumbles.

  • Do not drain all the fat (that’s flavor).

2. Transfer to slow cooker

Add cooked sausage to the crockpot.

Sprinkle flour over the sausage and stir well to coat.

3. Add liquids & seasoning

Pour in:

  • Milk

  • Heavy cream

  • Broth

Add butter, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir thoroughly.

4. Slow cook

  • Cover and cook on LOW for 4–5 hours or HIGH for 2–3 hours

  • Stir once or twice if possible

  • Gravy will thicken as it cooks

5. Finish

  • Taste and adjust seasoning

  • Stir in cheese if using

  • If gravy is too thick, add a splash of milk

  • If too thin, leave uncovered on HIGH for 20–30 minutes

Best Served Over

  • Buttermilk biscuits 🧈

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Rice

  • Toast or hash browns
