Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups whole milk (warm helps prevent lumps)

  • 1 jar (2.5 oz) dried beef, sliced into strips

  • ΒΌ teaspoon black pepper

  • Pinch of garlic powder (optional)

  • 4–6 slices toast


Instructions

  1. Prep the beef

    • Rinse dried beef briefly under cool water (optional, reduces saltiness).

    • Pat dry and slice into thin strips.

  2. Make the roux

    • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.

    • Whisk in flour. Cook 1–2 minutes (don’t brown).

  3. Add milk

    • Slowly whisk in milk a little at a time to prevent lumps.

    • Cook, stirring constantly, until thick and creamy (about 3–5 minutes).

  4. Add beef & season

    • Stir in chipped beef and pepper.

    • Simmer 3–5 minutes until heated through and thickened.

  5. Serve

    • Spoon generously over toasted bread.


Tips

  • Too thick? Add a splash more milk.

  • Too thin? Simmer a few more minutes.

  • Great over biscuits, mashed potatoes, or hash browns too.
