Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients

For the patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 is perfect)

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or panko

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 onion, finely diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil

  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced

  • 1 small onion, sliced

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper to taste

For serving

  • Mashed potatoes (highly recommended 😌)

Instructions

  1. Make the patties
In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, garlic, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
Form into oval or round patties.

  2. Prep the baking dish (like the photo)
Scatter a little extra chopped onion in the bottom of a baking dish.
Place patties on top and sprinkle a bit of breadcrumbs over them.

  3. Bake

    • Cover with foil

    • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes, until patties are mostly cooked

  4. Make the mushroom gravy
In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
Sauté mushrooms and sliced onion until soft and golden.
Sprinkle in flour and cook 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire.
    Simmer until thick and glossy.

  5. Combine & finish
Pour gravy over the baked patties.
Return to oven uncovered for 10–15 minutes, letting everything soak together.

  6. Serve
Spoon those gravy-drenched steaks over mashed potatoes. Add parsley if you’re feeling fancy 🌿

Pro tips

  • Want extra-juicy patties? Add 2 tbsp milk to the meat mix.

  • Love deeper flavor? Splash a little soy sauce into the gravy.

  • This reheats beautifully — even better next day.
