🥩 Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy
Ingredients
For the Steaks:
-
1 lb ground beef
-
1 large egg
-
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
-
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
-
1 tsp salt
-
1/2 tsp black pepper
For the Gravy:
-
2 cups beef broth
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
1 cup sliced mushrooms
-
1 small onion, thinly sliced
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tsp dried thyme
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Patties
-
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, salt, and pepper.
-
Mix gently until just combined (don’t overmix).
-
Form into 4–6 oval patties.
2️⃣ Brown the Steaks
-
Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
-
Add patties and cook about 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
-
Remove from skillet and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
3️⃣ Make the Mushroom Gravy
-
In the same skillet, add sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook until softened (about 5 minutes).
-
Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir well. Cook 1 minute to remove raw flour taste.
-
Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
-
Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme.
-
Simmer until gravy thickens (about 5 minutes).
4️⃣ Finish Cooking
-
Return the patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them.
-
Cover and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes until patties are fully cooked (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).
